Hi, Dormoney Family. My name is Amanda T. I wanted to write this letter to express how grateful I am for Dormoney. I found out about Dormoney from a friend of mine who suggested that I create an account and a Gift Bag because she knew that I had an outstanding balance on my tuition bill and the end of the semester was fast approaching. First of all, I was like, what is a Dormoney and further, what is a Gift Bag.
Well, I downloaded the app and was so excited to see how easy it was to set up my account and also how convenient it was to create a Gift Bag and work to get money to pay down my tuition bill. I told my story on my Gift Bag page and it basically was this:
I am first generation college student. My parents did not even know how to truly help me complete my college applications or scholarships because it is just something they have never done before. I did all of it on my own. A friend’s parent suggested that I ask my high school counselor. While she was some help, honestly, high school counselors are more worried about making sure the hundreds of students are in the courses they are supposed to be in and making sure that students have what they need to just graduate high school.
When I got my acceptance letters to college, I was BEYOND excited. And then I read all the many, many things I had to do before I even got on the campus! Most it involved money, payments for things, some of which I thought about but some I did not even know existed. I had to make a first payment to secure my spot in the college. I had to make a down payment to secure my dorm room. I had to sign up for this technology platform that would give me access to my textbooks so that I would have them on the first day of my courses in August. Finally, I looked at the list of expenses and saw that “lab fees” was included. I was not even majoring in a Science so I had no clue why that was in my letter! At any rate, I felt overwhelmed!
I applied for scholarships and also reached out to the people who run the department for my major and they were able to help me with another scholarship because of my intended major. However, the rest of my college expenses were up to me and my family. I knew I could not work and go to school, at least for the first year, because well, it’s college! Lots of work. Lots or projects. Mid-terms. Finals. When would I ever be able to hold down a job and go to school full time. I was able to get on a payment plan and my family helped as much as they could but in November of my first semester I found my tuition bill mounting and the threat of not returning to school for my second semester was looming. I was just a freshman! I just got started!
That’s when my friend told me about Dormoney. I tried it and I cannot even express how elated I was when I got my first donation. I just couldn’t believe that someone would just read my story and see my pictures and my video story and help me in such a big way. Soon, I had enough in my account to clear my balance. This was a feeling I will never forget. People actually wanted to invest in me and my future. Some of these people became recurring Donors and I have to tell you, there is not a donation to my Gift Bags that I get that I do not personally send a Thank You note each and every time. When I graduate, I am going to become a Doromony Donor because I am determined to make sure that another Student feels the love, support, care and concern that I feel from Dormoney Donors!
